He shares three helpful personality systems to ground readers in knowing themselves better, and he illustrates how each system impacted and changed his own life. He also emphasizes the importance of dealing with past wounds. The human ego is explained as it manages and runs ones life, often without awareness. A description will be given of various forms of ego adaptation or what could be called False Selves. As the ego or False Self fails, and it will, the door opens to living more out of the True Self. A key chapter on the collapse of the False Self, shares the collapses of prominent Christian writers as well as the authors own painful ego collapse. An ego collapse, while scary and disorienting, allows one to start anew with God as the foundation. The author believes, along with Thomas Merton and David Benner, that the True Self is where soul or spirit unite with the indwelling Christ. The Enneagram is then presented as a helpful tool for transition from False Self in ego to True Self in God. The author also presents three chapters on Gods Gift, Gods Sovereignty, and Gods Desire. Knowing God in this deeper way, helps put ego where it belongs as one stops trying to control life and maintain security. This will be followed by six personal stories of Christians pursuing God. As the reader examines these six stories, he/she will see how they spent time with God, what they shared, and how they came to discern Gods voice from their egos voice. The reader can see how they were moved from an Ego-Led-Life to a God-Led-Life. On this journey life becomes less about striving for love or significance, and more about knowing and following God/Jesus. As ones identity becomes secure in the unconditional love of Christ, the believer understands that life is not about what we can do for God, but about what He has done for us. This book was written to increase awareness of self and God, so that one may in humility accept the riches of knowing Christ in a intimate way. Following Him flows from deep attachment, gratitude, and having learned to hear His voice.
